Pozzi Makes Her Flight to the Winners Circle

The first edition of the Diamonds & Dirt Futurity brought one big barrel futurity back into Texas. How fitting that the first big Texas futurity in years be won by a native Texan.

Brittany Pozzi has been a woman on a mission over the last several years, not only pursuing world championships in the rodeo world, but developing some of the top futurity horses in the country during her “spare” time. This weekend marked a very busy weekend where her two worlds collided. She not only made the Finals at Houston on Satur- day but had two horses in the Finals at the Diamonds & Dirt Futurity as well. Two Finals, same day only about 4 hours and 100 miles apart.

But, with $50,000 on the line at Rodeo Houston and $30,000 to the average champion at the Diamonds & Dirt she had to make both.

First, Rodeo Houston, she and Duke had a good run but it was a measley .01 seconds too slow to make the Finals Shootout, so it was on to the Diamonds & Dirt. She qualified two horses out of the 20 to the Finals, in the first go of the futurity, LK Watch Me Rock placed second. In the second go of the Futurity she won third on Ima Super Fly Guy and fifth on LK Watch Me Rock.

LK Watch Me Rock, owned by LeAnn Kay, ran a little longer in the short go but still managed sixth place in the Average. However, Ima Super Fly Guy fired his best run of 15.966 in the short go which catapulted him to an Average Championship and a whopping $30,000 paycheck.

All told, Pozzi rode $41,565 of winners in the 1st annual Diamonds and Dirt Barrel Horse Classic Futurity in Bryan, Texas. Even though she didn’t get the big check ($50,000) at Rodeo Houston, she still walked away with $10,400. Not bad for a weekend of barrel racing.
We got a chance to catch up with World Champ Brittany Pozzi for a couple questions:


BRR: You went from Rodeo Houston to the Futurity, they were back to back, how were you able to get between the two?

Pozzi: John and Kristi Schiller chartered a plane for me so that i could make both finals. They went above and beyond and I really appreciate everything they did.

BRR: You have had such success at both rodeos and futurities. Which is the most challenging for you?


Pozzi: I think they are both challenging in different ways. The road and keeping your horse sound is difficult when your rodeoing. With the futurities, just the fact that you are riding a young horse makes it challenging.

BRR: You have achieved great success in rodeos and in futurities. What drives you to continue to compete at both when due to the grueling schedule most people choose to just go in one direction?

Pozzi: I love both types of competition and I enjoy taking a break from the rodeos and going to the futurities. I really like the challenge of the young horses and I don’t mind the schedule. I think I would be bored if I didn’t have a lot going on.
